Unmasking Deepfakes – Challenges Identified
by Mischa Soujon, Michelle Heinz
Deepfakes have become a ubiquitous topic in the digital world due to their media presence and the often sensational narratives surrounding them. This talk will provide an overview of the technology, detection methods, and ethical issues.
We will explore the challenges posed by rapid advances in image and video generation techniques to create highly realistic synthetic media, such as the potential for manipulation and disinformation that undermines trust in authentic content.
The talk will also address the complexities of deepfake detection and present a research strategy for identifying and distinguishing realistic-looking synthetic media from authentic content. Using interactive examples, we will demonstrate to the audience the difficulties of critically evaluating media and identifying potential deepfakes.
By presenting both the threatening facets of deepfakes and their positive applications in creative fields, this talk aims to stimulate discussion about responsible development and ethical practices in the age of synthetic media.
