Drawing Like an Architect: The Structure and Interpretation of Architecture Diagrams

We sometimes make fun of architects for drawing pictures. In reality, diagrams and sketches are among an architect’s mightiest tools: they are powerful abstractions that distill critical decisions, remove uncertainty, and get diverse stakeholders on the same page. “Ok, but I already know UML and C4”. you may think. Those standard notations are great for communicating decisions, but they are less expressive for moderating decision meetings and for creating what I call “Rothko Diagrams”, diagrams that reveal multiple layers over time without being confusing.
